LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDKY) – It looked like a scene out of a wild west movie. That’s how Lexington Police describe a terrifying video they uncovered of several dozen shots being fired out of a moving SUV on a quiet Saturday in March.
“If they’re careless enough to do that, what else are they capable of doing?” says Lexington Police Detective Anthony Delimpo.
For roughly a mile, witnesses reported seeing a black SUV trailing a white passenger car, firing multiple shots toward it. It began on Alexandria Drive and continued when the shooters turned down Devonport Drive on March 13. It was 4:00 in the afternoon.
“Both individuals are full torso hanging out of the vehicle on both sides, shooting live rounds in broad daylight in a neighborhood,” Delimpo says. “We have kids outside, it’s March, nice weather.”
Police say several bullets hit the white car, but not the people in it.
“It’s a miracle that something didn’t happen.”
No one was hit this time, but the city has seen its fair share of tragedies from careless gunfire. On Catera Trace in December, bullets meant for someone else permanently blinded then 5-year old Malachi Roberts.
In October, a barrage of bullets fired between two cars caught Alice Carter in the crossfire. The 82-year old, who was just getting out of her car, was killed.
“We’ve had some people who have been shot, innocently,” Det. Delimpo says. “When this kind of violence spills over, it affects the community people have been shot and killed.”
Now they need your help identifying the people in the SUV before something else happens.
“It’s not the first time. This isn’t the first day they’ve done this. Not the first time they’ve been involved in something like this,” says Det. Delimpo.
