LOUISVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — On Friday, someone in Maine claimed the $1.35 billion Mega Millions Jackpot, but a man and woman also won a $1 million winning ticket in Kentucky.

Kentucky Lottery said the two have been friends since high school and shared many memories over the years and winning the lottery is just another. The woman told Kentucky Lottery she wanted to buy Mega Millions tickets before the drawing. So, her friend handed her $5 and she bought two $2 random tickets.

When he checked the ticket Saturday and, saw the first five numbers matched, he wasn’t sure what he had won.

“I saw we matched the five numbers, but I wasn’t sure how much we had won,” the man said. “I called my friend, and as soon as I told her, she knew right away it was for a million dollars.”

The woman couldn’t believe it until her friend sent a picture of the winning ticket.

“Everything that day came into place, timing was everything,” he said. “If we had stopped at the original store, who knows if we would have had those same numbers. It’s an absolute blessing.”

Both received a check for $357, 500 after taxes.

The man plans to use his winnings toward buying a home and a car. The woman said her winnings will help her prepare for retirement.
