LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — If your vehicle is up for renewal soon, the transportation cabinet is encouraging people to get it done early.

County clerk offices will be unable to renew or issue vehicle or boat registrations, titles and transfers, license plates, and disabled parking permits from Dec. 28 through Jan. 8.

This affects both in-person services and online registrations. It’s part of a technology switch for clerk’s offices that’s been underway since 2015

“Any time you’re going to move systems, it’s not an easy process. But when we look at how antiquated our UI system got, the need to make this move is here. We’ll get through it. It’s never great to have to shut down services for, say, a week at a time, but we want to get this thing done,” Gov. Andy Beshear said.

The pause will not impact driver’s license services. The new system will also bring along new special license plate designs that are available on request.
