LONDON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a toddler.

Officials were dispatched at approximately 8:49 p.m. to southwestern Laurel County on Tuesday after receiving reports that a two-year-old male had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Responding officers provided first aid to the toddler until EMS arrived, and he was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Initial investigations revealed that the child accidentally shot himself with a pistol, resulting in a critical injury.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo told FOX 56 that other people were present at the home at the time of the shooting.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an official death investigation.

Although it is early in the investigation, Acciardo told FOX 56 they do not expect any charges to be filed.
