KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (FOX 56) – A man lying on a porch asking for help prompted the Knox County Sheriff’s Office to answer the call.

At the scene, a deputy spoke to a man who said he was attacked by 50-year-old David Caldwell with a hammer or instrument of some sort. The incident reportedly occurred after the two men got into an altercation in the living room.

The deputy confirmed he saw the man had a large laceration on his face and on his back.

Initial investigations revealed the man sustained a collapsed lung and a broken rib on top of his cuts.

Authorities said he was taken to Baptist Health in Corbin before being transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital.

Caldwell was taken into custody at 6:21 p.m. in the Knox County Detention Center, where he was charged with:

  • Public intoxication on a controlled substance (excluding alcohol)
  • Tampering with physical evidence
  • Attempted murder
