OWENSBORO, Ky. (FOX 56) – Police are investigating a Friday shooting involving a Daviess County deputy and a burglary suspect.
The Kentucky State Police said it was asked to investigate the shooting at around 11 a.m.
In a news release, state police said sheriff’s deputies were called to the 900 block of US 60 westbound in Owensboro regarding a man with a hammer breaking into homes.
“Deputy Alex Cooms, 31, of Owensboro was in the area when he observed a frantic woman and juvenile running from a home.”
Police said the woman told Cooms they escaped the home after being assaulted by a man with a hammer inside.
Gregory A. Embry, 39, of Owensboro was armed with a hammer inside the home. Police said Embry charged at Cooms with the hammer when the deputy fired his service weapon, hitting Embry.
Embry was taken to Owensboro Health in critical condition and Cooms was reportedly not injured.
