HAZARD, Ky. (FOX 56) — As the rebuilding process continues in eastern Kentucky after last summer’s historic floods, there’s another project in the works as well, aimed at boosting entertainment options for folks in Perry County. GattiTown is opening in Hazard later this year.

The popular entertainment center is known for its arcade games, rides, and all-you-can-eat buffet. The city of Hazard and Perry County leaders are working with a private developer to build the 12,000-square-foot fun facility. This is the first big project since the summer’s natural disaster, and Eastern Kentuckians are already so excited.

“As we work on the disaster, we must also get back to working on our parks, recreation, quality of life, and other issues, so we can have a whole community here,” said Perry County Judge Executive Scott Alexander.

Construction on GattiTown is happening in the East Perry Development Site, also known as Perry Plaza. It’s located on Highway 80, near East Perry Elementary. Currently, a dentist’s office, a car wash, and two restaurants sit on this property. Although the area has grown a lot these last few years, creating many respectable jobs for Eastern Kentuckians, officials want to see even more restaurants and kid-friendly businesses open up.

In turn, locals won’t have to travel to larger shopping centers in Leslie, Knott, Letcher, or Breathitt Counties for entertainment. They’re hoping businesses, like GattiTown, will draw more people to the area, where they can see more of what Hazard has to offer.

“Once you have anyone in your community, any other business has the chance to do business with them,” said Judge Alexander. “So not only is this great for the youth, and great for families, it’s also a great economic boost to all of Perry County.”

Leaders are also recruiting more businesses to come to the area. As they’re trying to give families and local groups a place to celebrate life’s biggest events, they’re also working to solve a more pressing problems. They’ve confirmed a second water plant is opening soon.
