LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – An online fitness resource has conducted a research study into the healthiest and unhealthiest states in the U.S.

Total Shape analyzed data on key health indicators in America to come up with their rankings. The metrics used include searches for gym memberships, the number of gyms per 100,000 of the population, the rate of adult smokers, and the state’s obesity rankings.

Kentucky came in as the second unhealthiest state in the U.S., coming in behind only West Virginia.

Kentucky had 40 searches for gym memberships per 100 people, 9.43 gyms per 100,000 people, a 23.6% rate of adult smokers, and a 36.5% obesity rate.

The top five unhealthiest states are:

  • West Virginia
  • Kentucky
  • Arkansas
  • Mississippi
  • Ohio

The top five healthiest states are:

  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • Vermont
  • New Jersey

A Total Shape spokesperson offered the following insights regarding the results of the study:

“America has a rich culinary history, and each state has vast arrays of different cuisines and delicacies. The temptation lies on every corner in every state! However, Americans also have some of the greatest sports facilities and events in the world, that inspire millions to get out and get active! It’s clear from the research that many states have a healthy balance and in doing so maintain a healthy lifestyle, however, it’s also clear that other states don’t.

“The fast-food industry in America is worth over $250 billion and 1 in 4 Americans visit a fast-food restaurant daily. Even in the healthiest states such as Massachusetts and Connecticut, there are just over triple the number of fast-food restaurants than gyms. In states such as Kentucky and West Virginia, this figure rises to seven times the number of fast-food restaurants to gyms.

“America has the most gym and health facilities in the world and the highest annual revenue from this industry globally, however the average gym member must travel between 4 and 6 miles to their local gym, whereas the average distance to the closest food establishment is between 2.6 and 3.7 miles.”
