LOUISVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — The lone gunman who opened fire at a Louisville bank Monday morning was employed by the business, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.
Calls first came in for an “active aggressor” around 8:30 a.m. at the Old National Bank on East Main Street. Officers were on the scene within three minutes and “encountered the suspect almost immediately still firing gunshots,” said LMPD Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey at a Monday morning news conference.
Police exchanged gunfire, and the shooter — later identified as 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon — died on the scene after he was shot by police, according to LMPD Interim Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel.
During a news conference Monday afternoon, police said Sturgeon’s weapon of choice was a rifle. Gwinn-Villaroel said Sturgeon legally purchased the AR-15 used in the shooting from a licensed firearm dealer on April 4, according to an LMPD update Tuesday.
Sturgeon worked at the bank for about two years, according to his LinkedIn profile, and had three prior internships there.
Gwinn-Villaroel confirmed Sturgeon filmed and livestreamed portions of the shootings on his Instagram.
“That’s tragic to know that that incident was out there and captured,” she said.
LMPD officers executed a search warrant on Sturgeon’s residence but could not detail what was recovered at this time.
Five people were killed and eight were injured and were transported to UofL Health. Of the nine patients treated, the hospital said five of them sustained gunshot wounds.
As of 4 p.m. EST Tuesday, the hospital confirmed Officer Wilt is still in critical condition, two patients are in stable but fair condition, and five patients have been discharged.
Those who died include Deana Eckert, 57; James Tutt, 64; Joshua Barrick, 40; Juliana Farmer, 45; and Thomas Elliot, 63, according to LMPD.
