LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Scammers continue to ask, threaten, demand, and coarse Kentuckians of their money.

Kentucky sheriff’s offices, police departments, postal workers, and government officials have all issued separate warnings about trending scams over the last few weeks.

FOX 56 has reported on issues such as ransom calls in Georgetown, fake package fees in Lexington, rental property scams, fake access to baby formula, false arrest warrants, shakedowns over fake missing persons, and even fake charity campaigns for Ukraine or fellow Kentuckians hit by recent tornados all this year.

The first day of June comes with more warnings. The Lexington Police Department (LPD) is warning the public of another uptick in telephone scams where scammers are pretending to be law enforcement agencies and demanding payment for fines and arrest warrants.

“The Lexington Police Department WILL NOT ask you for your credit card information, money, bitcoin, or another payment method for a fine or warrant. Do not send them money by any method. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the Lexington Police Department and asking for money, hang up and call (859) 258-3600,” Sgt. R. Guy Miller, LPD public affairs office, wrote in a statement.

Around April 1, Attorney General Daniel Cameron also issued an alert about this kind of fraud and said these scams were on the rise in Kentucky.

“Arrest warrant scams are not new, but this type of fraud is on the rise in Kentucky. Kentuckians in all 120 counties should be on guard for scammers who impersonate law enforcement and demand payment via gift cards or mobile payment apps. Report scams to ag.ky.gov/scams,” Cameron said in that release.

His office reported an estimated loss of $41,000 to this kind of scam as of April.
