FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) – More than 160 girls from several central Kentucky counties traveled to Frankfort for a special event getting them ready for prom.

A lot goes into finding that perfect prom dress, but Memorial Baptist Church made that process a lot easier. It’s the 13th year of “Cinderella’s Closet” in the area, where the girls can pick out a dress, jewelry, and shoes all free of charge.

“Maybe some of these girls have never had a dress on. Maybe some of these girls have never gone to a dance. This is their opportunity to be Cinderella for a day,” said Ruth Wiley of Memorial Baptist Church.

The Fairy Godmothers join in to help the girls pick out what they’d like, but they have an even bigger mission besides that.

“They will talk with them, give them encouragement, and let them know that they are a very special person,” Wiley said.

Students said the encouragement did wonders for their confidence, and they’re thankful for events like this, taking all the stress out of prom.

“It was really fun. Everybody was really helpful. I was really excited just because it’s a nice program for kids who might not have money for prom dresses or, you know, need help finding one and don’t have a person at home to help them find a good dress for themselves,” said student Alyssa Sexton from Phoenix Horizon Community.

Tina Bentley works with Phoenix Horizon Community, and she says these students will remember the work that went into this event as they dance the night away in their new dresses.

“I hope they take away that the community is really good to all the kids in need, and especially Franklin County for doing this. It’s just a blessing, and I hope they realize what a blessing it is,” Bently said.

Cinderella’s closet will continue through Saturday.
