Friend of UK graduate living in devastated Ukraine

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is causing concern for those still trying to find a safe way out of the country.

Douglas Newton is a Florida native and close friend of UK grad and former Ukraine resident Joe Bradley, who FOX 56 previously interviewed.

Newton has lived in Ukraine for 12 years and said he has enjoyed his time there with his wife who is a native.

Newton called the invasion devastating. He said there has been some street fighting in recent days and that he has heard some nearby explosions.

Newton’s wife stayed behind in Kiev to help her homeland, but the pair decided it was best for Newton and their dog to head towards Spain and help refugees there.

At last contact, Newton was in a town 70 miles outside of Kiev. The town had signs posted warning Russians they will be killed if they enter.

Newton said he is doing ok but wonders when or what he will be returning to in Ukraine when the war is over.

“I don’t even want to think about it yet. I can’t think about it yet. I mean I hope to go back but…I’m sorry I cry about that. Is it going to be half destroyed, is it going to be completely destroyed, is it going to stop next week…I don’t know,” said Newton.

Newton said he messages with his wife most days and that she is doing ok right now as well.

If you’re looking for a way to help Newton said the National Bank of Ukraine is accepting donations from any country. The funds will help the Ukrainian army.
