LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – The Lexington Police Department is investigating a homicide that took place on Thursday.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office said 51-year-old Raymond Bernard Brooks was declared dead at the University of Kentucky Hospital.

Brooks’ death now marks Lexington’s 36th homicide, falling one count short of 2021’s homicide total.

One neighbor at the scene Thursday, Shawnda Snow, said, “It’s sad that another young man lost his life to gun violence.”

Snow said she found out about the shooting when two females ran out of the ‘A’ building on the Phoenix Apartments on Jennifer Road, and were seen puking.

Snow also said that both the victim and the shooter didn’t live at the Phoenix Apartments.

“The perpetrator, I’ve seen him before,” Snow said. “Neither one of them live here. I don’t know why they were here.”

She also saw Brooks after he was shot.

“From the back building, he was in the hallway,” Snow said. “I could see him slumped over then he was sitting up, and after that, I went in the house ’cause it was getting too emotional for me, and it just hits home.”

Snow lost her son, Christopher Snow, in 2018 to gun violence and the investigation into Snow’s death is still ongoing.

Snow said she would like to see things change in the neighborhood, as this is not the first shooting she’s experienced on Jennifer Road.

“Instead of taking programs, cutting funding from the children, we need to add a after-school program or something constructive for the kids,” Snow said.

Lexington police reported that the shooter is on the loose and the investigation is ongoing.
