LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – On Monday, the Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) announced a vote of no confidence, declaring the “crisis demands immediate action.”

Kenneth Armstrong, the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Public Safety Commissioner, and Lisa Farmer, the Fayette County Detention Center (FCDC) Corrections Director were both the targets of the vote of no confidence.

Clark County Sheriff and President of the Kentucky State FOP, Berl Perdue Jr., cited knowing the challenges of running a department. Perdue also continued by emphasizing the importance of working conditions at FCDC.

In an official news release, Perdue said that officers should receive competitive pay and benefits. He also emphasized his belief that offers must feel respected and supported. Perdue made it clear when officers lose confidence in their leaders, morale falls and public safety follows suit.

In the news release, Perdue continued by acknowledging the FOP has followed conditions and events at FCDC for several cities and has been calling for systemic changes to address staffing shortages and overtime demands for years.

He did note that, while some elected city leaders have offered vocal support, the problems continue.

Perdue, with the support of the FOP, is encouraging Mayor Linda Gorton and members of the city council to examine the crisis going on at FCDC.

“When the safety and health of law enforcement officers are placed at risk for reasons unrelated to
the inherent dangers of the job, elected leaders must act — and the time for action is now!”, wrote Perdue.

He finished his call to action by pointing out how this crisis will not be resolved until city leaders understand the problems and help the FOP find both short and long-term solutions.

A press conference addressing the vote of no confidence was held on Friday at 3 p.m. at the FOP Lodge on 1097 Duval St. in Lexington.
