RICHMOND, Ky. (FOX 56) – The Eastern Kentucky football team has won two FCS national championships in its storied history, and now has its first chance in nearly a decade to try and win a third.
The Colonels have reached the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2014, sharing a three-way tie with Central Arkansas and Austin Peay for the ASUN championship. EKU holds a higher ranking than its two competitors, meaning it takes the conference’s automatic qualifier into the postseason.
A 45-38 win over Kennesaw State on Saturday kept the Colonels in the hunt for an at-large bid, but needed Central Arkansas to beat Jacksonville State in order to win a share of the conference title and get a chance at the automatic bid.
This is the program’s 22nd appearance in the FCS postseason, which is tied for second-most in FCS history with Northern Iowa.
The official FCS Selection Show will air on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPNU, where Eastern Kentucky will see its first opponent and location for the game.
