RICHMOND, Ky. (FOX 56) – In an era that sees the transfer portal land thousands of student-athlete’s every off-season, Eastern Kentucky University had a joyous press conference on Thursday morning.
The Colonels held a player-led press conference with their entire core from the CBI Tournament run and 23-win season, to announce they will be back in 2023-24. Devontae Blanton, Michael Moreno, Leland Walker, Tayshawn Comer, and Isaiah Cozart all announced they will be returning to play for the Colonels next season.
Cooper Robb and Michael Wardy will be the two seniors departing from the team, as their eligibility runs out.
“Me and my teammates, we’ve got unfinished business,” team captain and leading scorer Devontae Blanton said. “We want to start our legacy out the right way.”
A.W. Hamilton’s squad won 23 games this past season, and made it to the College Basketball Invitational championship game, falling 71-68 to Charlotte in the finale.
“The CBI was a great tournament, we learned a lot,” Cozart said. The junior was a force on the boards and in the post for EKU. “I think everybody contributed massively to that tournament, everybody improved, and I think the momentum from that is what we can build off of for the start of the next season.”
EKU’s 23 wins were the most by a Division I school in Kentucky this past season.
